With top businesses being embroiled in PR-nightmare episodes of late, more and more organisations are looking to offer a management training course in equality and cultural competence.

These courses teach management level employees the impact of discrimination in the workplace, in terms of language and actions, as well as covering off uncommon scenarios in which management must be able to show a sound knowledge of equality training.

To help you choose whether this type of training would benefit your employees, we have place together some tips on how to notice cultural competence (or a lack of it) in the workplace. It is valuable to note, first of all, that the description of a “diverse” workforce can relate to anything from a dialect to a postcode, and that discrimination can wear many uncommon guises.

Are your business leaders in tune with equality?

Do you work within an ‘inclusive’ company?

The leaders at your organisation are well aware of the challenges connected to motivating such a diverse workforce, but they are far less likely to be able to identify what “diversity” really means today.

1. Being receptive and generous towards each other’s identities, and being prepared to learn from them, as distinct from wishing to exclude or to be separate

2. Challenging all myths and negative stereotypes in a proactive and effective manner

3. Identifying prejudice and discrimination, and doing something about it, to make a positive difference for all, so that any barriers, self-imposed or institutionally imposed, are broken

4. Being open to change, choice and development, as distinct from being unreflective and rigid in values and beliefs

5. Ensuring that all functions, policies and procedures are inclusive and non discriminatory

6. Ensuring the prevention, or elimination of discrimination between persons on grounds of human rights, equitability and fairness

7. Ensuring honest employment practices with regard to recruitment, selection, retention and unremitting professional development.

In March 2007, and again in March 2009, the Arts and Culture Unit of the City of Cape Town contracted DEVELOPMENT WORKS to conceptualise and facilitate Cultural Diversity Workshops.

The first was a Women and Cultural Diversity Training workshop, which brought together about 32 women from culturally diverse backgrounds.

The second Cultural Diversity Workshop was with young artists between 18 and 35 years from various communities around the Western Cape.
