Question by skunkaperecords: Is Biomedical Equipment Technician a fantastic career?
I am 33yrs ancient and was laid off last November. I was working in Human Resources for a huge retail company (Guess Inc.) for over 6 years and I didn’t expect to get laid off but neither did the 10% of unemployed Americans. I want to get out of HR and start a really new career and preferably something that is sort of recession proof and doesn’t see layoffs all that often. Something that is simple to bounce back if I do get laid off.

I recently came across an article in USATODAY that said a Biomedical Equipment Tech is a fantastic career to get into and that it is in high demand. I’ve been researching this field for the past few days and I like everything I’ve read about it. As far as I know, certification is not required in this field but highly recommended. If I become a BET I will surely get certification through AAMI so that I can find a job simpler. I like working on electronic devices and the fixing broken things. Not to mention that I like the background of hospitals and working on my own and not with a ton of other people like I did in HR.

Does anyone know anything about CBET’s? Any suggestions? Will becoming a certified BET allow me to find a excellent paying job in CA? Do I need to get my bachelors to increase my chances? I want to start my new career in 2010 and with this 7-month program I believe I can. I also have my AA degree but do not feel like going to school for two more years to earn my BA. I am a father with two small children and money is more valuable to my family right now than continuing eduction is. If I was 23yrs ancient with no children then I would get my BA but it is much too hard now.

I reckon it would be a excellent career. I’m not so sure about the high demand…there’s bound to be alot of competition. Have a look at the occupational outlook handbook for info from the US bureau of labor about the job.

Question by : Why was my MEDICAID case closed after I had submitted all of my required recertification paperwork on time?
I recently re certified my MEDICAID. I filled out and mailed back the required re-certification paper work and application material in a timely fashion. Now I am receiving notices that my case will be closed because the kind folks at Human Resources in New York City have determined that I was late in getting back to them. This is so nerve wracking. I spoke with a medicaid-choice expressive prior to my Dec. 23, 2011 deadline. We re-certified over the phone and was told that a re-cert application was being sent in the mail. I received it on the 27th of DEC, 2011. I filled it out and sent it back the very next day on the 28th of Dec.2011.

The final deadline date to close my case was set for January, 05,2012 Do you mean to tell me that even with new year’s day taken into account they didn’t receive my paperwork in the subsequent 5 days leading up to the 5th of January?

I find it hard to believe that they didn’t receive my paperwork in time to process it. I have filed for a honest hearing and am waiting for a date to come in and contest their choice on my case. I know I didn’t do anything incorrect. What I want to know is if there is anyone out there that either works for New York State Human Resource Administration that can help me with my situation or someone who knows the New York State Medicaid system and how it works to please help me through this ordeal. Please help me with this matter. I can’t go without medical coverage. I’m Diabetic and suffer from major depression. To have a lapse in my coverage could cause a real detriment to my health and well being. Thank You For Your Help..

I personally reckon that since you posted the question, not trying, in this section and you do not already have all the elements you suggest a keyword search on any browser.
Given the few comparisons to your question, it seems that all the specialists have place ‘s acceptance of a fact: don’t let answers.

Question by : Could somebody please check my resume and cover letter and tell me why I’m not getting called by any company?
Could somebody please check my resume and cover letter and tell me why I’m not getting called by any company? My native language is Spanish but I’ve been taught English all my life. I’m very insecure about writing in English. By now I really reckon there might be something incorrect with the documents because I haven’t got called for an interview despite of hundreds of online applications.

Question by raspberryph: Any advice for entry level HR? (Breaking into HR) Interview! HELP!?
I got called for a human resources related position at a Bank.

I have been working my buns off for 6+ months to get even an interview in the field, so this means SO MUCH to me!

I have a BA in Sociology with a focus on Manufacturing Soc. (Soc in the workplace) and am pursuing an online Ceritificate in HR but I dont start that til April. It runs April til September. Then after that I take a crash course to take the PHR Cert.

Well I got called today for a human resources related job with a bank. I wrote on my resume I was pursuing this certificate, as I said, I am trying for it. The job description said PHR certification preferred.

How can I stand out in the interview? Are there any HR professionals that can give me some advice? I am trying to break into this field and I am SO NERVOUS but trying to keep my cool at the interview.

What might they question me? I haven’t had much HR experience in my previous positions but I am willing to work my butt off and LEARN and further my education in the process!

Any advice? THANKS!

As I’m sure you know most interviews now are behavioral so always prepare answers to some basic questions they always question these days like, 3 positive traits you have, 3 negative traits, clarify a time when you had to overcome a challenge and how you did it. . . that kind of things. You can probably do a search on behavioral questions online. They might question you about your lack of experience but I would be honest and say how much it would mean to you and how you would bring a strong work ethic and dedication to the position. I would always want to hear that from someone I’m hiring.

Question by : My legal rights?Legally fired? Forced to sign?WHAT DO I DO?PLEASE HELP!?
First let me apologize but I really need legal advise and I don’t know how to clarify it to some one who isn’t familiar with ISO certifications and such even I don’t know everything about them, please take a moment to really help me out. I have tried google and I don’t know where to go from there.

I work in the fasteners industry. I was originally hired as a receptionist, then unofficially (promoted) to making the invoices to go out to customers along with making packing slips (like receipts) for customers along with stock adjustments in the system, answering phone’s (basically did everything but coffee handouts”bi%ch girl”) along with the MTR’s (MILL TEST REPORTS) and Certificates of compliance and coating certifications for our material ect.
Most Certificates of compliance require a signature of the person whom made or checked the material matches up and the specifications of the bolt match up and are right. spec ex: Hex bolt a325 gr.a.

My problem is my boss wants me to start signing the Certificate of Compliance which is a legally binding document even though he says it isn’t.
I would have no problem signing such a thing if I really KNEW the specifications for bolts or was trained or went to college in this field.

ALSO IT IS FOR AKER SOLUTIONS WI CH IF YOU GOOGLE IT IS A MAJOR COMPANY WITH SOME SERIOUS MONEY.
They send us back paperwork allot stating it isn’t right which is a terrible mark on our ISO certification. They open this case thing and I have to do paperwork someone messed up years ago even!

He ultimately wants me to sign this paper before it goes out and now he has designated me as the “MTR” lady even though I didn’t agree to take this position on. His solution is to type up a sheet with all the specs they know of and basically I pick which ever one sounds right. He thinks this sheet will fix everything.

There is college I can go to learn about this he just wont send me and he denies the existence of proper training in the quality assurance department.

I am frightened if I don’t sign he might fire me. Can he legally fire me? He is signing the documents now until the spec sheets are typed up. No one else will sign them even our supporter manager wont nor anyone else in the company. My boss doesn’t even want to do it. I am not qualified for this position.

What can I do? Can I tell him no? If he does fire me can I sue? What are my options? I have been here nearly four years now and he has jumped me to uncommon positions all around the office. I have been sexually harassed here and so much more has happened which there were police reports of and such and I feel like he is forcing me into something I can go to jail for if the paperwork is incorrect. He said hode&* (our company) will get into distress if we are audited not me but that name is a company not a specific person. If I sign off something I am responsible. He thinks I am young and dumb but I know better because my dad has been in this industry for at least 40 yrs and he was a branch manager just like my boss.

Human resources despises me because I told her anytime something went incorrect. She sees me as a hazard for the company. I told her about multiple people on drugs and about the sexual harassment and everything…

What are my options? Am I doomed to be jailed for signing something I know nothing about? I cant just quite here I have to much job history here. I don’t even have a high school diploma…

Question by : Does a Hospital read every application when applying for a job?
I just recently sent in an application for a Pharmacy Technician position at a major hospital near where I live. According to the e-mail I cannot talk to recruitment to check the status of an application due to high volumes. Will the human resources department read everyone of the applications sent in at least the part on work history on how it relates to the job setting and bonus education section. Because I write well, and have a excellent solid work history, and I hope they check out the paragraphs that I wrote in those sections. I also had to take a 15-20 minute survey at the end of the application, which were multiple choice questions. I believe my application was well place together, but I believe they randomly pick based on the surveys you fiill out. I just want them to read what I typed in the work history and education parts of the application, and why I am choosing a pharmacy technician and leaving my current job where I have worked at for 10 1/2 years that has related experience for a pharmacy tech position. I just hope they take the time to read mine. I don’t have a certification in pharmacy technician, but I have medical background in college. It said on the summary of the job, that certification as a pharmacy tech is prefered, but not necessary. Why would they give you a requisition number when you can’t introduce yourself to human resources over the phone? If they answered the phone, they might as well have helped me out. I know there are a lot of applicants at a job like a hospital, but at least they can hear your voice when you call them up on the phone. If I worked at recruitment, I would allow people to question questions and I would be glad to read their application if they called me up and clarified why they need to read it. Any information about this will be helpful. I just reckon there should be some other method besides those long surveys that question you the same questions three uncommon ways wheter you agree, neither disagree nor agree, or disagree because anyone can make up answers, and that is not the best way to get to know someone, but I have a feeling that’s how they randomly pick applicants, because I have been declined for a uncommon job field because of the survey at a uncommon company, and some recruitment companies will allow you to introduce yourself over the phone because I have done that before and got a job, but they were only offering part time hours. I’m just looking for a career to have a stable income, but I have held the same job at a vet’s office for the past 10 1/2 years, and I have worked in the pharmacy area at the vet clinic, so I know how to mix drugs up like amoxicillin, and count medications accurately, and read instructions.
When I called human resources, they wouldn’t answer any of my questions or check status of application. Why do they answer the phones than? Is there someone I can talk to on the pharmacy team, because I have called the pharmacy over there up, and a lady answered my questions about what her job was like, so maybe someone there knows someone and can just tell them to read my application.
I know there are some gramatical errors on this question. I was just typing quick to get my question on here. My application does not have gramatical errors. I am pretty decent at grammar. I know I could be fantastic as a Pharmacy Technician, so it’s the recruiting that is frustrating.

Answer by jobbend
This is a long answer to a long question. You might not like the answer, but it’s based in fact and real world experience.

High volume recruiting for a large organization is a measured process. They don’t randomly pick backgrounds/applications randomly. If they are highly automated (which it sounds like the process you’re in is) then there is sort of a pass/fail rating on your application. And that’s the “survey” you refer to. This “survey” is really a screening tool that helps them to determine if you are a potential fit based on the answers you give. What the recruiter likely sees is a rating or scale that tells them if you are a potential candidate, or someone they need to pull out of the process. And sometimes, that determination is made for the recruiter – and they only see the applications that are qualified.

A propos open responses to questions on applications: If possible, you should have someone proof them. If that’s not possible, consider taking a writing course. If I were your job coach or career councilor, and you gave me this post to evaluate as a writing sample, I would tell you that open response questions are potentially a weak area on an application. Here’s why:

* Grammatically some sentences are not right.
* There are no paragraphs to separate information – I got lost reading it.
* It’s written like you were speaking to someone. Verbal and written language are received differently, and therefore need to be constructed differently.
* There are spelling errors and inexact usage of words. ex: (Why do they answer the phones than? Better: Then why do they answer the phone?).
* There are many run on sentences – very hard to read.

A propos why HR answers the phone, and why the don’t give you any information: You state that you would allow candidates to call and talk to you about the job/req. Until you have done a recruiting job, don’t be so sure that you would be able to do that. In many cases (especially large organizations) there is a fantastic deal of emphasis place on the time it take to fill a requisition. And the medical community is one of those cases. So recruiters are using their tools (databases, applications, screening processes) to be as efficient as possible. And they are also protecting the hiring manager who is charged with their own responsibilities.

Lastly – you state you have a college degree. Consider talking to the career center at the college you attended to see if there are resources available to you. They may be able to help make your application/resume stand out.
