Question by jarica: Is psychology a good degree for working in Human Resources?

Best answer:

Answer by Anna P
Yes, but you may need to get a masters in order to really get into the field. You could start off in a very junior position if there are job openings hard to fill in your geographic area. Sometimes HR consultants will hire BA psych majors if you have statistics and assessment coursework. Then later a company would hire you.

Question by IC: Switching to OD or I/O Psychology?
I am currently working in a biopharm company as a QA Training Specialist. My job is focused on the GMP area, but I am interested in learning more about and possibly switching to the Organizational Development or Industrial/Organizational Psychology fields.

What would be the best way for me to learn more about switch to these areas? I am looking into applying for graduate school but I am not sure which programs I should consider that would best first these areas. I am also looking into eventually obtaining a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Certified Professional in Learning and Performance Certification (CPLP). Would these certifications be ideal for someone in the OD or I/O Psychology areas?

Best answer:

Answer by bluegoat114
Go to apa.org and do some reading. I/O psychologists are primarily employed by corporations. You will need a minimum of a master’s degree. You will need to complete all the undergrad requirements, and take the GRE before applying. The certifications you mention are not necessary if you study I/O at the graduate level. (They will not help you in this field.) Become computer savy, as they spend much of their time on technology issues and their relationship to the workplace.

Question by nene: Cannot penetrate through human resources. Any ideals?
Over a year ago, I applied for a job at a company (nationally know which provides service on sexual health education and services) My local branch was not hiring so I applied for one almost an hour from where i was living as I wanted to get in with this company soooo badly, I was hired!!!! Unfortuantly due to the economy at that time, i was unable to take the job after waiting two whole months to start! Heartbroken, I sent the manager a thank u note and turned down employment. Fortunatly, there is a job opening at my local chapter, but HR is located in Chicago, two hrs away and gives me a general answer of they will call if they are interested when I call to check the status of my resume/application. I would love to let them know that I was previously hired, i am available to start immediatley as this is my dream job! However I cannot get past HR to personalize my situation. Unfortunatly, this company only allows one to apply online, and only gives out an paper application when selected to come in for employment. I need a way to capture the managers attention and seel myself to her. I am a single mother of three who is unemployed and has been for sometime since the economy went bad. I NEED this job baaaaadddddllllyyyyy!
How ironic was this, I met the manager who was going to hire me at an oreintation for my local branch, she recognized my name, however she is severing ties with the company. UGH!

Best answer:

Answer by I Rule You
There’s a reason why you can’t get past HR.

Question by : Is a BA in Human Resources a stupid degree?
Not sure if I’m asking that right but I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Resources. I am now pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching simply because I realized I want to work with children and not in business. At a family dinner, my boyfriends uncle asked me what I majored in during college and I told him HR and he said “You can major in that??!!” as though I told him I majored in something silly or something he’s never heard of. It really hurt me and it’s been making me wonder if when I’m done with my MA, people are not going to hire me because I have a stupid degree. Let me know what you think. Thanks guys.

Best answer:

Answer by Monika
I think Human Resources is a good degree, people pretty much know that it falls under the Business umbrella and you can use a Business degree in almost every field.

Question by : Which is better masters degree: Human Resources or MBA?

Best answer:

Answer by b4iquit
Which is better depends greatly on your motivation and interests. If you plan a career in Human Resource Management, then HR is a good option. But why limit yourself. An MBA is more general in its focus and consequently can offer you a broader range of career opportunities. It can also broaden your horizons and take you into areas you had not previously considered.

For my money I would recommend the MBA, but like lots in life, its your choice.
