Human Resources does get you cornered into this profession. But, I reckon like in any profession once you start down that path you have to stick with it in order to advance. A degree will help you climb the ladder but in HR experience is what will help you the most. You are dealing with people mostly, of course, and that makes the issues always uncommon and your time spent studying out of a book won’t offer much guidance because of the complexity of so many situations. I would strongly recommend taking advantage of as many internships as you can while in school. It is extremely hard to find an entry level HR position if you have nothing but a degree in HR. Experience is everything in this field!
